Adventures in Africa

January 24th, 2010

Africa remains a continent of mystique, where traditional values and dozens of cultures intermingle with arid deserts, sub tropical forests, near-extinct volcanoes, endangered mountain gorillas and a host of other superior attractions, making it one of the most adventurous destinations known to man.

Although Africa is a vast and untamed wilderness, safari specialists have, over the years, tapped into the local knowledge and experience, and today Africa, in all her magnificence, can be quite easily and safely revealed to the more adventurous traveller.

Each region of Africa has its own particular allure and no one nation is comparable to the other. Even though the continent was effectively ripped into shreds by the colonial powers, the cultures, traditions, crafts and verbal histories of the region have endured and even strengthened since the heady days of independence.

There is a feeling of pride and uniqueness among the vast and distinctly different clans of local people who inhabit this patch of the planet and although the past may have been painful for many, there is today a definitive resurgence in the belief in Africa and all things African.

Southern Africa adventure tours abound, from elephant-back safaris in the lush oasis of the Okavango Delta in Botswana to Dhow cruises along the Kenyan coast to gorilla trekking in the heart of the Ugandan forests.

For premier game viewing, East Africa has traditionally been the destination of choice, but for a romantic tropical beach paradise there are a number of regions that will suit:

The islands of Mozambique, including the Bazaruto Archipelago, Pemba and Inhaca The epitome of a beach getaway , the decidedly French island of Mauritius The Indian Ocean coastline of Kenya that boasts some of the best underwater diving in the world

If rugged and hostile territory is your vision of a unique African holiday, then Namibia is the ideal destination. The Namib Desert is one of the most inhospitable regions of the continent whereas the red dunes of the Sossusvlei are incredible in both their hue and their reach into the skies.

South Africa, located on the southern-most tip of the continent, has an entirely different ambience with sprawling, first world cities, an effective infrastructure and a burgeoning economy. It offers both bush and beach, with the city of Cape Town earmarked by many as one of the most exciting in the world.

For a unique African holiday, simply pull out the map, close your eyes and let your finger fall onto it at will and then head off to your destination – you will arguably never want to leave.

Types of Africa Safaris

January 7th, 2010

Safaris are of different kinds and you should choose one according to your style and requirements. Some things to consider would be your budget, number of people, where you want to go and the time of the year you are choosing to travel. Most tour operators offer tailor-made safaris so you can get an itinerary that pleases you and your co-travellers.

Tailor-made Safaris

Everyone deserves a tailor-made safari, as it allows you to experience Africa in a non-rushed and enjoyable style. These kinds of safaris take into consideration YOUR budget and requirements.

Fly in Safaris: These safaris offer you a faster way to travel distances, giving you a chance to discover more of Africa as you do not waste countless hours driving around. An example of a fly in camp is Okavango Delta, situated in Botswana. You could spend the morning looking at game in one part and could be at another camp by lunch time. One thing you should keep in mind though is that the weight of your luggage is usually limited to 12 to 15 kg (30lbs).

Private Vehicle and Guide: Hiring a private vehicle is another great way to travel whilst seeing Africa. This also means you get a private tour guide in the guise of your driver. This kind of safari allows you flexibility of time and also allows you to carry as much luggage as you want (not unwarranted though). Private vehicles are a good option where the roads are not very bad and distances are not large. It’s great for more than two persons and especially for families and large groups, as it works out cheaper.

Family Safaris: A family vacation to Africa is a great idea and there are many safaris tailor-made to suit your family’s needs. Children and elders sometimes have some restrictions, so it is advisable you speak with the tour operator and only then plan your safari.

Adventurers’ Club, Kenya Family friendly safaris in South Luangwa Zambi Family safari’s with Wilderness – Kruger NP and Rocktail Bay Safari for the Kids – Kruger, South Africa Young Explorer’s – Okavango Delta and the Kalahari, Botswana

Small Group Safaris

If you are travelling as a small group, there are safaris to suit your needs. Also, you can join other group safaris. The disadvantage is that the plan is set in stone and cannot be changed. An advantage, though, is that you get to meet different travellers from all over the world.

Horse Riding Safaris

This safari is for the horse-loving traveller who doesn’t mind spending some time in the saddle. The safari planners also take into consideration non-rider partners, but you should be prepared.

Botswana: Okavango Delta, Tuli Enclave, The Kalahari Kenya: Masai Mara & Laikipia South Africa: Kruger, South Africa, Tswalu, Phinda, Ant’s Nest Zambia: Kafue National Park Tanznia: Serengeti

Photographic Safaris

These safaris are planned keeping the photography lover in mind. This includes an experienced guide who will make your journey of photography through Africa memorable.

Walking Safari

This safari is not for the weak, as many times the guides walk almost six to ten miles a day. But it is great way to see Africa, as only at a slow pace can you really enjoy the sights and sounds of the African bush. There are walks in Botswana, Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania and Zambia.

Canoeing Safaris

Canoeing Safaris are considered the most enjoyable safaris. You canoe down the Zambezi River, which is teeming with wildlife and vegetation. Canoeing takes place either above the Victoria Falls or lower in the Zambezi Valley.

Mobile Tented Safari

This is a novel and unique way to see Africa. You either drive or fly down to meet your mobile camp. If your budget is not a concern, then this is a trip for the adventurous.

Gorillas and Chimps Tours

Watching the endangered Mountain Gorillas in their natural habitat is exhilarating. There is a large population of chimpanzees as well and is a great safari attraction.

Special Interest Safari

These safaris are great for those who want little different things, like scuba diving with the White Sharks or Hot air balloon riding or climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro. All this can be arranged for you.
