MISSION STATEMENT

Environmental Health Department aims at promoting the Health and well being of all communities in Lugazi through contributing to the reduction of morbidity mortality and disability due to poor environmental health conditions through improved health services delivery.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

  1. Raise latrine coverage and utilization to 80% and reduced on faucal oral routed diseases among children under 5 years.
  2. Improve on the management of solid and liquid wastes.
  3. Promote and encourage control of malaria and other related diseases and increase awareness among community on disease prevention and control vectors.
  4. Increase level of community mobilization, advocacy and participation in environmental health programmes
  5. Improve on safe food handling practices especially in catering establishments markets and street food vendors.
  6. Mobilize and sensitize community on death and birth registration.
  7. Increase community awareness on improved housing.
KEY CHALLENGES
  1. Poor sanitation (low latrine coverage) and housing conditions particularly in camps and slum areas of Geregere and Kinyoro.
  2. Poor personal and domestic hygiene practices by the community.
  3. Indiscriminate management of liquid and solid waste.
  4. Common diseases particularly malaria, respiratory tract infections, eye infections, intestinal worms, tuberculosis and AIDS.
  5. Environmental degradation.
  6. Insufficient funding for environmental health programmes.
  7. Poor food handling practices in catering establishments and street food vendors.
  8. Increased vectors like mosquitoes, cockroaches, flies, rats etc in the community.
  9. Static immunization coverage.
  10. Non registration of birth and death in villages.
  11. Low level of community mobilization and participation in health promotional programmes.
  12. Poor operation and maintenance of facilities by user communities for sustainability of water and sanitation facilities put in place
STRATEGIES
  1. Strong advocacy and mobilization for improved sanitation and hygiene in the community and SCOUL camps.
  2. Construction of public latrines in identified congested areas
  3. Advocacy for increased funding for environmental health programmes
  4. Capacity building for staff and community leaders and the community in the area of environment health.
  5. Effective supervision and monitoring of solid and liquid waste management and enforcement of relevant Public Health Legislations.
  6. Observing and actively participating in child health days.
  7. Strong advocacy and mobilization for birth and death registration.
  8. Carry out integrated health education discussions on health promotions in communities and institutions.
  9. Implementing an effective vector control programme.
  10. Regular inspection of catering establishment and other license premise and intensified supervision and monitoring of food vendors.
  11. Advocacy and mobilization for proper environmental management and control.
  12. Sensitization of local leaders on their role in sanitation and hygiene improvement in households.
  13. Advocacy and mobilization of user communities for sustainability of operation and maintenance of water and sanitation facilities put in place..
PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS 2006/2007 – 2007/2008\

Achievements

  1. Carried out vector control exerc9ise in the 4 administrative wards of Namengo, Nakazadde, Kawotto and Kabowa.
  2. Improved on community sanitation through construction of public toilets at Cable, St. Kizito and UGMA Quarters.
  3. Improved on water supply coverage by protecting 2 springs one at Kiteredde and one at Lusozi.
  4. Improved on environmental management by planting 300 trees at various locations and maintaining flower gardens.
  5. Implemented child-health days exercise where 14,500 children under 15 years were de-wormed and 5800 children under 5 years were given vitamin a supplementation.
  6. Effected the exercise of insecticide mosquito bed net treatment to reduce on the man mosquito contact in the fight against malaria.
  7. Collected 3760 tons of garbage.
  8. Enforced the renovation of more than 98% of business premises in the central business area.
  9. Inspected 350 households for sanitation and hygiene improvement.
  10. Supplied Town Agents with registers for births and death registration.
